Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) hosts an annual “Field Day” which is a preparedness competition to see who can get the most confirmed contacts.
The Halifax Amateur Radio Club had no intention of being left out of the fun and opened their doors of their new location at the Hammonds Plains Fire Station to the pubic, Halifax Mayor Mike Savage and other dignitaries to see that amature radio is alive and well in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
During Field Day, more than 40,000 amateur radio operators throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate Amateur Radio’s science, skill and service to their communities and country.
This unique service combines emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills, all in a single event.
Some of these skills were put to good use during the recent wildfires here in Nova Scotia.
For more information about field day and how you can join in the fun, see the RAC’s website.
